Our experience with Rollins & Petersen has been an interesting one. We went in with the expectations of fixing my daughters teeth so she could close her mouth and chew her food, her teeth were that bad. We were not so concerned about everything being perfect nor asthetics, we were really looking at functionality. We were very clear on this point during that first visit. When it was recommended during the initial interview that she will eventually need 4 teeth removed to get her bite to 100%, i asked how necessary that was for functionality. It was explained to me that we would not know until we got there. This part of the treatment plan was tabled for the time being, at least that is what i was told. Fast forward 8 or so months, the orthodontist is now recommending we have our daughter have the 4 molars removed so they can move forward with treatment. These molars were so far below the gumline that they would have to use general anesthesia to remove the teeth, general anethesia always brings a risk of death. Upon asking if there was a risk of death if we do not pull the teeth the orthodontist said no. I also asked what would happen if we waited, he said that the teeth would become more crowded if, IF the molars were able to come through. I asked if there was a possibility that the molars may come through on there own, he said anything is possible, even remotely possible. We decided to wait. The teeth came through with no problems and no crowding, yay!! We did get quite a bit of push back though while we patiently waited even though we did see progress of the teeth erupting through her gums monthly.
During this time we fell upon financial hardship and were unable to make our regularly scheduled payments. This effected the way we were treated as well. While i did try to make payment arrangements for a payment that was 1/3 of our originally agreed payment we were strongly encouraged to make a higher scheduled payment and what we could afford at the time was declined. Fast forward several months, it is suddenly being recommended that we remove the braces. I can not help but to feel that this recommendation has been made based upon our inability to pay what they wanted us to over the past several months. I also find that all of the previous late charges have suddenly been tacked onto my bill.
I feel this practice is very aggressive with there approach to orthodontics. While they do have a goal of getting a smile as perfect as possible i can not honestly say that all decisions are made with the best interest of the patient. Most of the time my daughter was treated with respect but there were many times that she was treated more like a file. They would go over to her and just start working, no introduction no explanation of what was going to be done.
They have currently presented us with a form to sign releasing them of liability for not completing treatment. The doctor explained to me that this form was only necessary because we chose not to remove the molars, the same part of the suggested treatment that was supposed to be tabled and not necessarily part of the treatment plan per our intial conversations.
This practice offers points for certain things. You can redeem these points for gift cards to commonly shopped places. We thought this was a great perk. Unfortunately you really have to keep an eye on this points system as they do not usually reward you all of the points you have earned. For example, my daughter recieved movie tickets in the mail(never did she request these) for referring someone but she never recieved the 500 points that the charts say she should get.
